The people behind Greywacke Winery

Kevin Judd is the famed founding winemaker at Cloudy Bay.

Kevin and Kimberley Judd have been making their Greywacke Marlborough wines since 2009. They are assisted by Richard Ellis who came on board in 2014.

Greywacke vineyard

Greywacke has an own 2 ha vineyard in Rapaura, Marlborough. Greywacke also sources fruit from mature vineyards within the central Wairau Plains and the Southern Valleys. These prime viticultural sites are cultivated using yield restricting vineyard management techniques and intense canopy management regimes.

A number of the vineyards are owned by the Sutherland family (his old friend from his Cloudy Bay times), while complementary grape parcels are acquired from additional select sites, all located within these sub-regions

Greywacke wines

The Greywacke wines are among the most highly regarded in Marlborough. They are among the most interesting and complex as well as deliciously food-friendly.

Greywacke produces the classical Marlborough varieties of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir as well as the much lesser grown Riesling. The wines have layers of complexities and textures, with richness and style that take them above the norm.

The name Greywacke

The name Greywacke was adopted by Kevin and his wife Kimberley for their first Marlborough vineyard located in Rapaura. It is named in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the soils of the vineyard.
