Tasting Note:
Ripe, full fruit with complexity perfectly balances with the oak. Great structure

#93 Top 100 Wines 2024
I am sure that the vast majority of our readers will not have heard of Bilancia, but this is one of those wines that should encourage everyone to sit up and take notice. The Chardonnay Tiratore screams class. The 2021 Chardonnay Tiratore La Collina Vineyard is a wine of substance that’s held within a corset of acidity and well-handled phenolics. It’s all about compact power. Its flavors are not dictated by fruit but more savory, nuanced character. There’s some attractive reduction here in the form of a pinch of saltiness, which combines with classy hazelnut-like French oak notes, ground almonds and nectarine. If I were looking to show a new discovery to other wine collectors, I would have this in my backpack.

Decanter
A stylish, inviting wine with a rich nose and very neatly put-together palate. A medley of fruit (grapefruit, yellow peach, ripe apple), hazelnut nougat and bran biscuit alongside a concentrated, fine-grained palate with good energy and build, culminating in an appealing burst of tangy acidity on the finish. Will reward patience. Drinking Window: 2025 - 2040.

The 2021 Tiratore Chardonnay is powerful and concentrated, but it is also superbly balanced. This is rich and dense and undulates over the palate with salt and richness…kaleidoscopic, really. There’s curry leaf, yellow peach, saffron, grapefruit, preserved citrus rind and even a hint of warm sourdough crust. It’s a ripper of a wine. There’s a really long draw of flavor across the palate. This is most important. It is sapid and staining. Drinking Window: 2023 - 2035.

The Real Review
Seductively creamy-textured chardonnay with intense citrus/grapefruit, vanilla, hazelnut and spicy oak flavours. Youthful wine with cellaring potential.
Additional information
Type: White wine
Varietal: Chardonnay
Vineyard: Single vineyard Chardonnay from vines originally planted in 2001 on the
lower slopes, terraces and flat, old riverbed of la collina vineyard.
It has always been Lorrain and Warren's plan to produce a flagship Chardonnay from
the la collina vineyard, reflecting the variety and the vineyard site
rather than the winemaking. The site is planted to a number of different clones of
Chardonnay, predominantly B95 and UCD15 with a
smaller contribution in 2020 from 548 and 809.
The clones and the rows are represented
by the stylised artwork of the label.
Vintage 2021: 2021 was a yet another exceptional vintage for Hawke’s Bay and this Chardonnay shows the great
ness of the vintage.
Winemaking: The fruit is 100% hand-picked, whole bunch
pressed to French oak barriques for
Fermentation by indigenous yeast.
The wine spent 11 months in oak prior to bottling; there was no fining or cold stabilisation. There
were no additives other than sulphur.
The name Tiratore: tiratore Italian (to-ra-tó-re) hunter/marksman. When planting these vines, old, spent bullets were found in almost every hole dug
on the slope of la collina; we imagine this area was used for many years as a
firing range for target practice.
Alcohol: 13.5% vol
Wine style: dry
Bottle size: 0.75l
Notice: Contains sulphites.
Cellaring potential: This wine is ready to drink and will continue to develop positively for 6 – 8 years.
Closure: Screwcap
