Review for Te Awanga Merlot Cabernet Franc 2015

Sam KimSam Kim (Wine Orbit): 94/100. This is splendidly composed and styled; the seductively engaging bouquet shows blackcurrant, plum, cigar, cedary wood and mixed spice aromas, followed by a concentrated palate that is superbly weighted and mouthfilling. The wine offers gorgeous fruit power, while remaining firmly structured and balanced, finishing impressively long and satisfying. At its best: now to 2023.

Bob Campbell, MWBob Campbell, MW: 90/100. Elegant red with ripe plum and dark berry flavours together with a seasoning of toasty oak and a suggestion of liquorice. A stylish red from a favourable Hawke's Bay vintage.

review Te Awanga Estate Merlot Cabernet Franc 2015Jamie Goode: 91/100. Sweet, rounded and supple with a peppery edge to the rounded sweet cherry and blackberry fruit. Shows dried herbs, mint and thyme in the background. Nice grippy structure allied to a lovely rounded, sweetly fruited palate. This is really attractive.

Michael CooperMichael Cooper: 4.5 stars & Value +. The stylish 2015 vintage (4.5*) was estate-grown near the coast and oak-aged for nine months. Full-coloured, it is mouthfilling, with strong, ripe berry, plum and spice flavours, a hint of herbs, fresh acidity and very good complexity. Tasted in April 2019, it is still youthful, with obvious potential; best drinking 2021+.

Tasting Note

Rich and crimson in colour, this wine displays aromas of black cherry, cassis and cigar box. The palate is full, rich and soft with flavours of plum and cedar. It is a wine of excellent balance and structure. A wine styled for approachability but will reward careful cellaring.
