Reviews

Review Stonyridge Airfield 2019:

Bewertung Stonyridge Airfield 2019Cameron Douglas MS: 95/100 (Outstanding). A red blend from Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc, Malbec and Merlot. Sometimes referred to as the baby brother to the Larose - this wine has as much power and elegance, a fabulous core of fruit and concentration with aromas of cassis and violets, blackberry and dark chocolate. Intense and youthful on the palate with flavours of dark berries, clove and vanilla, smoked barrel, bacon and cassis. Bold tannins and acidity to match - this wine will age if cellared correctly. Best drinking from 2025 through 2035+. Decant for service.

Kritiker über Stonyridge Airfield 2019James Suckling (JamesSuckling.com, November 9, 2021): 94/100. This intense red has a distinctly fleshy and glossy style and differs from the more structured Larosse. Aromas and flavors of red-plum and dark-cherry essence with blackberries and blackcurrants, as well as chocolate. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, malbec, merlot and cabernet franc. Drink over the next eight years.

Tasting Note

Larose's baby brother has always been an excellent wine in its own right and is the most immediately approachable of the Stonyridge estate wines. Forward ripe currant and blackberry sit alongside thyme, vanilla, chocolate and violets on the nose. The palate structure is soft and supple, and beautiful drinking while young and vibrant.

Vineyard: Waiheke Island, New Zealand. The North facing site, which Stonyridge proudly occupies, affords their vines all day sun enabling Stonyridge to ripen these Cabernet varieties to perfection. The site is sheltered from the cooler Southwest winds and in summer we can experience over 80 days of temperatures in the 30 °C mark during the ripening period. The soil is a poor low-fertility Waitemata Clay saturated with nodules of magnesium, manganese, and iron oxides. Magnesium is the central molecule of chlorophyll, essential for photosynthesis, much loved by grape vines and so often deficient in NZ soils.

Vintage: 2019 was a very calm vintage considering recent climate trends. Having witnessed the extremes of droughts or huge rain systems in previous years, comparatively the '19 season was very harmonious from start to finish. From the veraison fruit looked balanced with uniform ripening across all varieties. The vines were obviously flourishing in near perfect growing conditions. Although Waiheke's summer did not bring the highest temperatures or the lowest rainfall of other great vintages, it was the consistency of the fine weather which lifted the '19 vintage to its "one of the best ever" status. Paired with the north facing slopes of Stonyridge, the team maximised the sun and heat available, so the phenolic ripeness remained well ahead of the surrounding properties on the Island. The flavour profiles across all varieties easily compared with fruit grown in much hotter and drier climates of the New World.
