product description

Quartz Reef Bendigo Single Vineyard Pinot Noir 2020

Review

review Quartz Reef Bendigo Single Vineyard Pinot Noir 2020Michael Cooper: 5 stars. ...the classy 2020 vintage was estate-grown at Bendigo, hand-picked and matured in French oak barriques. Full, bright ruby, it has a fragrant, complex bouquet. Mouthfilling, it is savoury and well-structured, with deep cherry, plum and spice flavours, seasoned with nutty oak, ripe tannins and a finely balanced, lingering finish. A very ageworthy wine, it's well worth cellaring to 2025+."

Tasting note

Varietal: 100% Pinot Noir

Alcohol: 14% vol

Food match: Serve with wild duck and pork dishes

Residual sugar: <1 g/l

Bottle size: 0.75l

Wine region: Bendigo, Central Otago, New Zealand.

Vineyard: Bendigo estate Vineyard, the pioneer vineyard of the Bendigo subregion.

Soil: arid clay, fine gravel and quartz soils

Vintage: It was a cool start to the season with occasional frosts, two brief hailstorms in October, and a higher amount of rainfall during December. Central Otago also experienced more cloud cover than normal, the severe bushfires in Australia may have contributed to this. By the end of January, the weather was more settled. Veraison was early February and the grape harvest began early March.

Winemaking: Hand-picked on the 31st March, 1st, 8th and 9th April. Each clone was small batch vinified with a small percentage of whole cluster per ferment. Cold Soaked for up to 7 days before indigenous yeast fermentation kicked in. Gentle plunging each day, followed by post maceration of up to 9 days to ensure optimum fruit and tannin balance. Total time on skin; 19-24 days. Drained directly into selected French oak barriques (28% new) where the wine aged for 12 months during which wild malolactic fermentation occurs. The winemaking was very much in keeping with the traditional practices of the Old World. The winemaker, Rudi Bauer, has combined these techniques, and his own personal understanding, to create this wine.

Cellaring potential: 2026-28. A maskuline Pinot from Central Otago that will develop well when you have the patience to cellar it.
