Hans Family Estate Spirit of Marlborough 2015

Hans and Therese Herzog introduce their flagship Bordeaux Blend Spirit of Marlborough

Reviews:

Bob Campbell, MWBob Campbell, MW: 95/100 & Wine of the Week.  Dense, flavoursome wine with cassis, fruitcake, liquorice, chocolate-mocha, spicy oak and dark berry flavours. Richly-textured with a backbone of ripe tannins. A very impressive wine from a very serious producer.

Michael CooperMichael Cooper: Potential Wine Classic.

Tasting Note:

The 2015's sweetness and velvety tannins are present in abundance and the wine is massive in the mouth as well as incredibly pure and well-delineated. Blackberries, plums and black currents scents let this wine sing in full harmony! Hints of spices and cedar add to the great length. Perfect to drink now, but one which will make a great addition to a wine lovers cellar.

Soil: The vines grow on the sandy, gravelly soils of our vineyard, akin to those of the Pomerol region. Both climates are moderated by their proximity to the Ocean and the presence of rivers yielding wines of exclusive velvety quality best after 10 years of ageing.

Vintage 2015: While Marlborough basked under blue skies throughout summer, the fruit on the vines was developing into something magical. Week after week of warm, dry weather followed on from a cooler than average start to the season. The long warm ripening season ended in a beautiful Indian summer perfect for these Bordeaux varieties.

Winemaking: The lure of producing this wine is what brought the Herzogs to Marlborough. The sandy and gravelly soils of our vineyard are akin to those of the Pomerol region. Both climates are moderated by their proximity to the Ocean and the presence of rivers yielding wines of exclusive velvety quality best after 10 years of ageing. Perfectly healthy, destemmed grapes allowed for a long cold soak to extract the superb flavours and beneficial antioxidants of the skins. Winemaker Hans Herzog then let the must naturally progress through a long wild yeast fermentation and extended post maceration. After gentle pressing, the young wine was transferred into partly new French Barriques where it underwent the second natural malolactic fermentation. The minimal oxygen exchange over a long 30 months of maturation in the same barrels made all the difference. The wine and wood had time to marry together to form a richer, more complex and textured wine, able to age for many years in the bottle. Natural sediments may show.

The wine is an homage to Pomerol: The smallest wine producing area in the Bordeaux region is more a community where the vineyards are family-shared. You will not find typical huge Bordeaux chateaux as in the Médoc area. However Pomerol hosts one of the most famous of all: Pétrus. The Pomerol wine can be more robust than others in Bordeaux. They have an exclusive velvety quality. Pomerol is at its very best when the bottle reaches the age of 15! Being the passionate wine lover Hans is, he wants you to enjoy his stately flagship wine at its full potential and like a 'Grand Cru' Pomerol that means many years of bottle ageing - which he did but without increasing the price tag!
