Gibbston Valley China Terrace Pinot Noir 2016

FalstaffFalstaff Magazin (Peter Moser, Ulrich Sautter published 01.01.2021 ): 95/100.

Cameron DouglasCameron Douglas, Master Sommelier: 94 (= outstanding wine of superior character and style). Immediately intriguing bouquet with a complex message of mineral, ripe cherry and raspberry led fruit, some red apple and dark rose moments; noticeable mix of new and older barrel use. On the palate – dry, ripe plump red berry fruit flavours plus cherry and some plum, a little pepper spice then oak spice and flavour; youthful tannin bite and acidity to match, a wine in development with some integration needed over the next few years. Decant for service or best from 2019 through 2027.

Bob Campbell, MWBob Campbell MW: 94/100 & #3 Central Otago Pinot Noir 2016. Quite a perfumed pinot noir with violet, red berry, plum, spice, thyme and nutty oak flavours. A taut, focused wine with surprising power evidenced by a very lengthy finish. The use of 50% whole-bunches in the ferment has added a sappy spice character and additional structure suggesting good cellaring potential, although it makes the wine a little tight and hard to read right now.

Joe CzerwinskiJoe Czerwinski for Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: 93/100 . The Bendigo-sourced 2016 China Terrace Pinot Noir features attractive floral and tea-like aromas, backed by wonderfully pure and direct black cherry fruit. It's medium to full-bodied, with enough dusty, savory tannins to warrant cellaring for another year or two.

Raymond ChanRaymond Chan:  19/20 (5 stars). This is a fulsome Pinot Noir with an array of dark-red cherry and berry fruit with dark herb and whole bunch complexities on a well-structured palate.

Tasting note

Deep red coloured. Serene and calm, the wine is suffuced in a lovely earthiness. Garlanded with pretty red fruit aromatics, it opens into a sturdy wine, with typical China Terrace tannins punctuating the palate. Complex and brooding, with many years ahead of it.

Aromas and flavours:

Rote BeerenPflaumen

Vineyard: Central Otago, New Zealand. The China Terrace Vineyard is located in the Bendigo sub region of Central Otago. Gently sloped on the lower edge of a large terrace (named China Terrace), it unfolds Pinot Noir and Chardonnay over some 6 hectares. Being over 320m, it retains a coolness relative to Bendigo's natural warmth. This, and the complex accumulation of loess ,clay and schist in its soil, gives wines of fresh, bright complexity. Picking typically occurs early to mid-April.

Winemaking: Two clones, 667 and 777 are used in a number of small scale ferments, each with a different proportion of whole cluster. Maceration time varies according to the whole cluster proportion; typically this ranges from 14 days (100% whole cluster) to up to 28 days (0-12% whole cluster). After pressing, the wine spends 11 months in barrel (30% new). The wine is assembled, then bottled without fining, filtration or cold stabilisation. The finished wine has 49% whole cluster.

Cellaring potential: 2026
