Blank Canvas Escaroth Pinot Noir 2018
Accolades
Blank Canvas Escaroth Pinot Noir 2018:
Cameron Douglas MS: 96/100 (Outstanding). A single vineyard expression presenting a complex, pure, intriguing and perfumed bouquet. Light red berry fruits, red apple skin and scents of place with aromas of fine silty clay and sand minerals then complexity from judicious use of oak with light brown kitchen spices followed by aromas of mild toasty barrel and savoury dried herb layer. Equally complex on the palate, tense and youthful with firm textures and velvet mouthfeel from tannins and acidity. Savoury with a core of fruit and flavours that reflect the bouquet. A fine wine with power and finesse, complexity and length. Best drinking from 2022 through 2030.
Bob Campbell, MW: 94/100. From the Escaroth vineyard just south of Blenheim. Light in colour but not lacking in charm or power. An elegant wine with cherry, spice, dried herb, bramble and nutty oak flavours. Accessible now but should develop well with bottle age.
Tasting Note
The 2018 is true to vineyard and vintage, producing a wonderful fragrance of violets, red cherry and pomegranate overlaid with a smoky, earthy savouriness. It is a site that truly reflects vintage variation displaying the perfume and delicacy of the year, whilst retaining its innate muscular tannin structure that ensures it will age.

Additional information
Type: Red wine
Grape varial: Pinot Noir
Alcohol: 13.5% vol
Food match: This wine is versatile with food and will pair well with savoury lamb, venison and game dishes, as well as fish dishes such as grilled salmon or tuna. A quintessential match for a vegetarian option is grilled field mushrooms.
Vineyard: Escaroth, Taylor Pass, Marlborough, New Zealand. A unique, north-facing dry-farmed hillside vineyard nestled in the Taylor Pass of Marlborough. The sub-region has distinct meso-climate and arguably the easternmost valley of the Southern Valleys chain. Ample low-vigour clay which is perfect for quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Winemaking: Matt’s time in Burgundy has given him the best of both worlds: he learnt from the region with centuries of knowledge and has combined it with Marlborough’s innate ability to produce blockbuster, perfumed aromatics in an elegant but serious Pinot Noir framework. The handpicked bunches were cold-soaked for 5 days before undergoing spontaneous fermentation by natural yeasts. Matt and Sophie hand-plunged the wine during its ferment which included 50% whole clusters. The wine was pressed to French oak barriques, all of low-toast level (35% proportion new) for 12 months, with a further 3 months in tank to gently and naturally settle. Bottled without filtration.
