Ata Rangi Martinborough Pinot Noir 2018

Bewertung Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2018Sam Kim, Wine Orbit: 97/100. Splendidly perfumed and immensely complex, the wine shows sweet cherry, thyme, floral, cedar and earthy mushroom characters on the nose. The palate displays outstanding concentration and persistency, together with refined texture and flowing mouthfeel, finishing wonderfully long and seductive. It’s multi-layered and perfectly proportioned with a stunning line and length. At its best: 2022 to 2033.

FalstaffFalstaff Magazine: Top 100 Red Wine Icon New World & 96/100 (by Anne Krebiehl MW)A subtle floral touch plays on the nose along with a sense of creamy red cherry fruit. With more air, that Martinborough savouriness comes through. There is a lovely grip, as if starched silk crunched tenderly. A seam of vivid freshness plays along that fine-boned tannic structure. It is that structure that allows that red fruit to shine, to radiate its aromatic freshness. There is such gorgeous, savoury length and such tenderness.

Bewertung Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2018James Suckling ( 96/100. Aromas of red cherries, cedar, dry brown spices, forest berries and wood, as well as rose-like perfume. It opens and aromatically enriches with some air. The palate has all the trademark layering of smooth tannins and a smoothly ripe ball of fresh red cherries. Assertive drive to the finish. Drink or hold.

Bewertung Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2018Bob Campbell, MW: 96/100. Elegant, aromatic pinot noir with bright, high energy floral, violet, cherry, fresh herb, star anise and restrained spicy oak supported by fine tannins and juicy acidity. An attractively fragrant, supple wine that’s a little lighter than usual but gives a nod in the direction of Burgundy and shows promising ageing potential.

Bewertung Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2018Gourmet Traveller Wine: Top New Release New Zealand Reds: 96/100. ‍This legendary label gives a nod in the direction of Burgundy with bright, high energy floral/violet, cherry, fresh herb, star anise and restrained spicy oak supported by fine tannins and juicy acidity. A little lighter than usual, it’s a wonderfully fragrant, supple wine.

Bewertung Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2018Cameron Douglas MS: 95/100 (Outstanding). There’s no mistaking the pedigree of Ata Rangi in the bouquet of this wine - detailed, polished, fresh, youthful and varietal. Aromas of ripe dark red strawberry, cherry, wild raspberry and a core of minerality. The oak scents blend seamlessly through the fruit depositing moments of baking spice and nut. On the palate - fresh, very tense and youthful with firm tannins and plenty of acidity. Fruit and oak flavours mirror the nose. Make no mistake this is excellent wine, but very young - a wine that demands harmonising time in your cellar. Lengthy detailed finish. Best drinking from mid to late 2022 through 2030.

Bewertung Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2017Michael Cooper: Super Wine Classic & Not-to-be-missed New Zealand wine. One of the greatest of all New Zealand wines. This benchmark Pinot Noir is the region's greatest, with a superb string of vintages back to 1984.

Tasting Note

A medley of aromas on the nose: cherries, mulberry, exotic five spice and liquorice. It has a gorgeous entry, opening smoothly into a full mid-palate. Flavours of rosehip entwine with a fine and savoury tannin structure that persists as an elegant, classic feature of Ata Rangi Pinot Noir.

Additional information

Type: red wine

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Alcohol: 13.5% vol

Residual sugar: <1 g/l

Bottle size: 0.75l

Food match: Match with duck, pork, beef and lamb dishes

Notice: contains sulfite

Vineyard: Martinborough, New Zealand. The deep, lean, free-draining gravels of Martinborough, high wind run, low rainfall and exposure to the southern ocean means average pinot noir yields here are the lowest in the country. These factors, along with the significant age of our vines, contribute to the consistency of quality year after year and to the unique and distinctive sense of place.

Vintage: The 2018 season was one of the warmest Ata Rangi have seen. On the Martinborough Terrace, adrier than unusual November and very warm December led up to regional temperatures breaking records in late January. This created a good buffer from the wetter and cooler weather that appeared at the back end of the season. Grapes were therefore picked pleasingly ripe and in great condition.

Winemaking: Only the oldest parcels of fruit are used in this premium Pinot Noir. The fabled Abel clone, allegedly smuggled from Burgundy in the mid-70s, makes up 40% of the blend. 35% whole bunch with the remainder destemmed. Peak ferment temp 32°C, all ferments handplunged. Total tank time 20 - 23 days. After pressing, complete malolactic ferment in oak. 11 months total in French oak (35% new) , then blended and held for another 6 months.

Cellaring potential: 2028+

Closure: Screwcap

Serving: Serve Pinot Noir at 16 - 18°C, that is slightly cooler than a typical room temperature, to best enjoy the layers of aroma and flavour as the wine slowly warms in the glass. Decanting an hour or so before serving is worthwhile, especially for young and/or more structured wines.

Produced and bottled: Ata Rangi Vineyard, PO Box 43, Martinborough 5741, New Zealand
